“Women’s Equality Day” commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, which legally assured the right to vote for all American women–white and black. However, state laws and racial intimidation at the polls–especially in the South– would continue to disenfranchise the vote of black women until the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
“Women’s Equality Day” has been celebrated since a Presidential Proclamation in 1973 following a bill introduced by Congresswoman Bella Abzug. We will recognize our victories at the march and rally on Thursday, August 23rd even as we join forces to push forward against all discrimination against women.
Please bring lawn chairs.
